My parents had one of those. It was faithful transportation for as long as they owned it. Got rear ended once, first car accident.

Was the Silhoutte the same platform as the Pontiac Montana? Or Chevy Uplander?

Chevy Venture and the Pontiac Montana.
Prior it shared a platform with the Lumina APV and the Pontiac Trans Sport.

The 3800 powered ones were reliable. Although I remember in insides had a terrible habit of falling to pieces long before the drivetrain gave any issue.

The only engine you could get in that gen was the 3.4; might have been different in the previous gen. The engine wasn’t terrible, the transmission was what did my parents one in.

Consider me corrected. Previous gen was the 3800 offering. Carry on ;)

My dad had a 2002 Regal with the 3800 the same time my mom had the silhouette. Decent engine, rest of the car around it? Pass. Coincidentally , the transmission also did that car in.

Huh, interesting. I wouldn’t have guessed the same platform as the dustbuster twins.

I have to ask,
How are these people having so many trans issues in 3800 powered cars?!?!?!?!
We’ve had north of 20 3800- powered vehicles among family since I was younger. None of them had any trans issues, all were sold with 200-250k miles.
Oh wait we had one trans fail. The car had 323k miles, had been hit twice, and had never had a fluid/filter done in it’s life!

The position of the A pillar and the relative ages I thought were different enough. With GM it seems like they have a million different platforms for similarly sized vehicles. But then again, I suppose this is GM we are taking about...

The olds was a 3400, not sure what happened to it, it was well maintained .
We suspect that the shop we took the buick to didn’t correctly refill the transmission when they flushed it.

That would make more sense. I wouldn’t be surprised, I don’t have any faith in shops anymore after things I’ve seen.

The one the OP posted would have shared with the Venture and Montana:

We took our cars to that place for over 10 years without incident.

After finding the things I’ve found: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/fun-things-you-find-1823373043
Mind you these are all from shops people swear by.
No offense, but you may have been getting lucky for over 10yrs, or that shop may have led to some of your issues. Given they likely messed up a trans flush, I think you may be giving them more credit than they deserve.
I hope I’m wrong and that’s not that case, but I feel too many people don’t realize how little “Certified” shop actually means.
